Maryland JUCO Announces Dates, Game Times for Final Conference Basketball Tournaments

Hagerstown, Md. -- The Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference (Maryland JUCO) announced Monday it will hold the 2019 Men's and Women's Conference Basketball Tournaments, Thursday, February 14 through Sunday, February 17. This year marks the final year for this historic tournament and will be hosted by Hagerstown Community College.

Seeding for the men and women will be done on February 8, and will be made available on the conference website at www.mdjuco.org. The schedule of games can be found below.

The Maryland Juco Tournament began in 1974. Prior to that year, the conference was known as the Tri-State Athletic Conference, which ran from 1958 until 1973. Hagerstown won the first conference tournament in 1958.

"The Maryland Juco Conference Basketball Tournaments have a storied legacy and important historical significance to many of our current and former student-athletes, coaches, and athletic administrators," said Maryland Juco President and CCBC Catonsville Athletic Administrator Melissa Miller. "It is bittersweet that 2019 will see the last of these events and mark the end of an era."

The conference membership's desire to maximize its 30-regular season game limit and best prepare for post-season play within NJCAA guidelines necessitated a decision to discontinue the Maryland Juco Tournament at its May 2018 annual meeting. Conference administrators remain excited to serve the student-athletes at its 17 member institutions.

The Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference (Maryland JUCO) exists to govern and conduct championships for the conference's 16 varsity sports. Chartered in the late 1960s, the conference is composed of 16 Maryland community colleges that compete in a variety of varsity intercollegiate athletics. Maryland JUCO oversees and promotes programs dedicated to academic and athletic goals of its diverse institutions, while enhancing opportunities for balanced intercollegiate athletic programming. The conference provides organizational structure for its membership while strengthening commitments to their students and communities. In accordance with the philosophy of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), the conference operates under the highest standards of integrity, equity and sportsmanship.

Each season, Maryland JUCO verifies the eligibility of all its student athletes, schedules, and statistics for statewide competition. To help foster the best academic and athletic experience for student athletes, the Maryland JUCO relies heavily on the work of its sports liaisons, coaches associations and the Maryland JUCO Advisory Council.
